Introducing Sumedha and Brakefree!

Brakefree, a brainchild of Sumedha Mahajan, is probably the first high impact sportswear brand that addresses the needs of Indian women. If you’ve ever struggled with finding the right workout tees, bras, tights, capris, etc., you know what we’re talking about here. The pain is real, ladies!

However, thanks to Sumedha, we don’t have to worry anymore, or wear those ugly, uncomfortable, round-neck t-shirts with cotton pyjamas. How awesome is that!?

Meet Sumedha Mahajan

Renowned author of ‘Miles to Run Before I Sleep’, Sumedha has come a long way from the quaint bylines of Amritsar to the hustle bustle of Mumbai. She isn’t stopping anytime though!

Here’s Sumedha’s story, in Sumedha’s words, by Sumedha:

“I am an endurance runner, and was only woman in the record setting Greenathon, covering 1500 kms from Delhi to Mumbai. It was a life changing experience - even though I had completed many runs in different parts of the world. On Indian highways, a woman in shorts, often stumbling, dealing with bruises and other personal hygiene issues, was an unseen and unheard of phenomena. It bolstered my resolve to stick to my faith, and to keep running. Not only for myself but for all women out there who have always been told that they are not good enough, strong enough or fit enough. 

I run my own business consulting agency along these lines and because of my book, I have been interacting with women across India and I realised the biggest problem - we don't have proper sportswear. Most of us are forced to wear men's sportswear due to lack of options. I shared their concerns with reputed sportswear brands but it was like talking to the wall.  I was told - “If you are so concerned about what women athletes and fitness enthusiasts wear in India, why don’t you make some yourself?” And that’s exactly what I decided to do. I decided to do something for hundreds of women out there who are not even on the radar of these brands.”

 

Meet Brakefree

"When the winds are against women, we build our own kites to fly” - this is what Brakefree endeavours to achieve with its premium quality, high impact sportswear.

“When all the major brands turned their backs on me, I decided to make my own brand of sporting wear for Indian women” says Sumedha, when talking about the inspiration behind her brand.

She once fought against all odds to pursue her passion, and is once again battling them to establish authentic women’s sportswear in the country. Brakefree is the first Indian brand to fight for the cause of ensuring that women don't have to "adjust" anymore. Earlier, sportswomen wore whatever garment was available in the market and if not that, they wore men’s sportswear to their events which, needless to say, were uncomfortable and barely suited for their needs. But now, they can don a pair of High Impact Champion Tights, top those with a High Impact Anti-Odour Tee and underneath that, a High Impact Non-Bouncy Bra, and be unstoppable, comfortable, confident and perform as champions .
